Clinton Street Redux Redux

I enjoyed Clinton Street so much that I returned last Saturday. Twice. While the prospect of having the same server made us feel slightly sheepish, it wasn't as if we were making a repeat visit to a free sample stand at Costco. I know it's not like we are starving for dining options here in New York, so why go to the same place for brunch and dinner? It's simple, really -- CSBC doesn't serve fried chicken at brunch. (How can you not love a place that has www.greatbiscuits.com as its website, I ask?)

While the menu is decidedly American comfort food, it also offers sophisticated options such as a gorgeous plate of ruby red roasted heirloom beets atop a snowy bed of tangy goat cheese, accessorized with a confetti of toasted almonds and artfully ringed with balsamic vinegar. The butter lettuce salad with roasted pears and gorgonzola was also deceptively simple and memorably delicious. On the other hand, I was not as impressed with the apple-and-blue-cheese beignet, which turned out to be more of an empanada than a beignet, and more dough than filling. The fried chicken, however, was as crispy, tender, and comforting as expected.

Clinton Street offers a beer and burger from 6-8 p.m. each night, prompting us to make plans to return the following night. But that would have just been overkill. We'll try to stay away at least one full week.
