Comida en Mexico City

In short, muy rico. I loved nearly every meal we had, and even the less-than-exciting dishes were still better than what one finds on the East Coast.

Of the five mornings we spent in Mexico City, four started off at the aptly named Cafe El Popular right down the street from our hotel. Since Travel Buddy had the huevos a la mexicana each of the four mornings, the only way to know that this photo was taken on the first morning is because of my omelette oaxaquena in the background. The tamales on the second and third visits were particularly delightful.

Best dinner of the trip was at Los Girasoles, which specializes in alta cocina mexicana (Mexican haute cuisine), where we enjoyed blue corn empanadas stuffed with squash blossoms and pollo in mole sauce.

No trip with Travel Buddy would be complete without a visit to a vegetarian restaurant. My carnitas vegetarianas (con guacamole y frijolitos refritos) at Yug Vegetariano were quite tasty.

To my surprise, my favorite meal of the trip was at the Coyoacan branch of El Tizoncito, a fast-food-type place. I'm not sure if it was because I was starving after our visit to the Frida Kahlo museum (and the Trotsky Museum, which we may or may not have visited, but only for purely educational reasons), but I could not get enough of my tacos chilangos with expertly grilled pastor and frijoles or Travel Buddy's tortillas con nopales y hongos (cactus and mushrooms) or the awesome hot bean dip. Or the horchata, which Lonely Planet described as "creamy heaven in a glass." I have no doubt all the other touristas there on Lonely Planet's recommendation would agree with me.
