Watching Tom Petty's halftime show right now while eating a salad from Maoz. Not your typical game day food, but a terrific find for my healthy eating habits (you know, the ones I'm trying to adopt in preparation for the big trek this May).
This is, in fact, my second meal from Maoz today, since when I like something, I go for overkill early on to test my affections. Earlier this afternoon, I had the Maoz royal meal deal -- a whole wheat pita sandwich stuffed with five falafels, eggplant and hummus, Belgian fries (frites, for the bilingual among us) and a soda, all for $7.95 (a dollar more for your choice of fresh apple, orange or carrot juice). You also get to customize your sandwich or salad with your choice of toppings from the incredibly awesome salad bar, which offers fresh toppings such as pickles, olives, pickled baby eggplant, carrots, cucumbers, tomato salad, coleslaw, red cabbage, roasted broccoli and cauliflower (the best), tabbouleh salad, tahini sauce, garlic sauce, yogurt sauce and assorted spicy-looking sauces.
Maoz is a fast-food falafel bar that started in Amsterdam and now has three locations in the United States, two in Philadelphia and this one in Union Square. Makes me feel somewhat bad that we're sending McDonald's abroad in exchange.
