Yes, I know that dim sum means "touch the heart," but more often than not, it's my stomach that walks away feeling touched after good dim sum.
I had this feeling recently at Dim Sum Go Go. I had tried this restaurant a couple summers ago and found it quite good, but I'd been hesitant to return out of the perverse logic that it was too clean and therefore not authentic enough. Adding to the lack of authenticity was the fact that Dim Sum Go Go does not offer the pushcart dim sum experience. But after enduring passable dim sum under Lord of the Flies-like environments in places like Jin Fong and Golden Unicorn, I decided that clean and sedate may not be such a bad thing after all.
Of the six dishes we had here, the shu mai and the pork stuffed bean curd, both plump with juicy pork, were the best. The shrimp dumplings and the shrimp in rice noodles featured large fresh tasting shrimp (deveined, happily) and were quite good. Less impressive were the chicken and sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, which although steamed perfectly lacked any flavor other than soy sauce, and the turnip cakes, which tasted slightly burnt.
Although we did not order it, every table around us had an order of egg rolls. I'll have to go back to see if they're onto something.
